When Is the Best Time to Go?

The best season for bear watching is typically the following:

  • April is too soon because the bears are spread through large forests due to lack of food.
  • May is already a good month but only for bear enthusiasts and photographers. The bears are eating grass and they will be very close.
  • From June until July the bears are already moving in their territories, where we usually observe them in the wild valleys.
  • August and September are the best months for making nice photos.

Some 4 months provide excellent wildlife activity and comfortable travel conditions.

We compare Bear Watching Destinations in Europe

Here’s why our bear watching tours offer a unique experience compared to other European destinations:

Bear watching in the Tatras
Our tours take advantage of open alpine meadows, giving visitors exceptional opportunities to spot bears in their natural habitat. No bear hides, no feeding – just real, undisturbed wildlife observation.

Romania – Carpathians
While Romania has large brown bear populations, most sightings occur near bear hides or feeding stations. Dense forests and lack of open meadows make spontaneous bear encounters rare.

Slovenia
Bear watching is usually limited to small forest hides for photographers, with restricted views. These setups are far less effective than observing bears across alpine meadows.

Sweden & Finland – Scandinavian Forests
Forest-based bear safaris offer comfortable hides for photographers, but sightings are not guaranteed every day. Bears remain wild and unpredictable, making encounters less frequent.

Italy – Abruzzo & Apennines
Small bear populations and long hikes mean the chance of spotting a bear in the wild is very low – around 10%

Why Choose us for Bear Watching from the UK?

  • Highest probability of seeing wild bears in open alpine landscapes
  • Authentic wilderness experience without artificial feeding or hides
  • Guided hikes with English-speaking bear experts
  • Easy access from the UK: direct flights to Poprad and only 45 minutes to the starting point.

TripAdvisor Reviews

Tripadvisor review: We saw bears

Our guide took plenty of time to wait with us for the bears. He tailored the tour to our needs (our fitness level, our level of confidence, and where we preferred to see bears).
Overall, it was a successful tour. He even modified the tour because the bears were taking their time to appear.
Thanks

Tripadvisor Review: Bearwatching accompanied by excellent guide!

After booking quick contact. Information what to bring and where we would meet. Everything went very smoothly. Booked for trip from 1pm to 9pm. Beautiful varied hike through the valley. Because of the heat, the bears did not show themselves but because of the knowledge and tenacity of guide Stefan, bears were eventually spotted. Stefan is a walking bear encyclopedia; he really knows a lot and conveys this in a pleasant way. Highly recommended and would go out with him again.

Tripadvisor Review: Amazing

My tour guide was very accommodating considering the steep hike and my fitness level we went through the thick forest and onto the other side to see the mountain slopes and bears foraging in their natural habitat He was quick to spot them and help me to see them we seen also near and mother and cubs The experience was great and I will recommend anyone who is passing Slovakia to see this nature beauty of the mountains and forests.

Itinerary

1. Meeting Point

Meeting with the local wildlife expert in Podbanské at 13:00 at the parking area, where participants will receive powerful binoculars for wildlife observation.

2. Hiking Bear watching Tour

From there, we begin our journey into one of three nearby valleys known for having the highest chances of brown bear sightings. During the hike, the guide will introduce you to signs of bear activity such as bear-marked trees and bear dens on the slopes.

We will stop at several strategic observation points and we watch the slopes or bear corridors with binoculars. When an individual bear or a mother with cubs is spotted, we will pause quietly and observe from a safe distance.

3. Bear Safety

Before heading back, the guide will provide a practical safety briefing on how to behave during a bear encounter, based on personal field experience. You will also hear fascinating stories about close encounters with bears and observations of bears hunting in the wild.
